My Wilton cake decorating course #3 has sadly come to an end and this was the final cake I made for class. Hard to believe that barely a month ago I’d never worked with fondant before and now? Well, all I can say is I just love doing fondant cakes! I started doing cake decorating over ten years ago but it’s just now that I’ve learned fondant techniques. I was so intimidated for sooooooooo long but quite honestly fondant is incredibly versatile, pretty darn forgiving… and a whole lotta fun :) It’s SO much fun that I’m doing my very first giveaway – all with the intended purpose of sharing the fun with one lucky reader!
I’ve taken a few Wilton cake decorating courses and the techniques I’ve learned have come in really handy in a variety of ways. From jazzing up brownies to decorating cupcakes to making gumpaste flowers to doing full out tiered cakes… and I really enjoy it. This final cake was quite a challenge – but totally in a good way. I hadn’t before covered a cake in black fondant and I discovered it was more difficult than white fondant. You see, when you have white buttercream under white fondant if there’s a small tear in the fondant it’s not nearly as noticeable as white buttercream peeking thru a small tear in black fondant! LOL! The “quilted” look and making fondant swags were not taught in class but I had seen them done on other cakes so I searched the internet for information on how to do work it out :) And most importantly I learned that no matter how much time I think a cake is going to take… I’m wrong and it’ll take longer so add plenty of “extra” time :)

And because so many people have emailed with questions and wanting to get started with cake decorating classes or further their cake decorating skills, I’m giving away one $50 gift card to Michael’s Arts & Crafts store. Michael’s offers Wilton cake decorating classes on a regular basis and it’s such a terrific way to develop your skills… and meet some great people as well. To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling me how you’d spend the $50 gift card :) Maybe you’ve never done any cake decorating and you’d spend it on your first course! Maybe you’ve already done some cake decorating and would spend it on additional supplies! Or maybe you’re not into cake decorating at all and you’d spend it on scrapbooking paper or something entirely different! But whatever it is leave a comment before midnight PDT on Sunday August 9th and you’ll be entered. Limited to US or Canadian residents this time around :) I’ll randomly draw a number and announce the winner on my site. Be sure to enter so you have a chance to win!!
Thanks everyone – entries are now closed.

Even though my class is over, I’ll be continuing to make fondant covered cakes – in fact I’ve promised my coworkers! Pretty much most of what I bake they’re the ones who get to eat it :)

What a beautiful cake. I would go for a cake decorating class. You inspired me. :)
I would love to take a cake decorating class at Michael’s. I have inherited a lot of decorating tips, and do not know what to do with any of them!
I would probably spend it on a mix of cake supplies (took all the Wilton courses) and a mix of painting supplies (new hobby of mine). :)
I would take the third Wilton course and learn how to work with fondant so I could maybe make a cake 1/2 as beautiful as that one. It is beautiful!!!
Oh, and some wilton goodies, too.
Thanks
In following quite a few of the bakers & cookers on Twitter, I really have been inspired. I would take a beginning decorating course. I would LOVE to know how to make the roses on the nails. I went (for the first time EVER) to the Wilton Tent Sale and bought some tips to start with. My daughter who is going into 6′th grade hasn’t let me touch them yet! This would be our time together. Thanks for the chance! Your work is stunning! I’d be so proud!
Very cute! I have a lot of stuff from michaels, but I always like the poster board for cake bases, I’d like to play around with embossing stuff, and it would be fun to work with different shimmery stuff.
I would love to take a cake decorating class, or spend it on cupcake supplies!
that cake is the most beautiful cake ever!
I really love how the lowest layer looks! :)
Gr8 job!
I am totally going to spend it on cupcake decorating stuff I love decorating and cupcakes.
I am a baking/pastry student and my cake classes start in a couple weeks. With this I can buy some supplies and start practicing at home. Nice work by way.
I would most definitely use it to take a cake decorating class! I actually had no idea Michael’s offered such classes until I saw it on you site. Then, a few days ago I had the pleasure of going to Michael’s in the evening without my kids and saw a class in progress. This was a cupcake class, but none-the-less intriguing. I would most certainly love to conquer a Wilton class though, can’t imagine how fun that would be!!!!
I’m a student and I get stress relief through baking. My classmates appreciate this trait of mine & are always ready to taste-test the outcome! I’ve wanted to take a Michael’s class for some time now, but being a student, I have a very small budget. This would help me reach my goal & expand my baking horizons. :)
Gorgeous cake! I love the quilting.
What WOULDN’T I spend $50 on at Michael’s? I was just in there and I was marveling at some Wilton cupcake pans that were ginormous! More like mini-cakes really. Then I’d stroll on over to the scrapbooking section and pick out a few cute stamps and papers and punches. I’m trying to get my 3 year old in the kitchen with me more and more and I make scrapbook pages of our exploits so she can see how far she’s come when she’s grown up.
I love Michael’s and I love cupcake/cake decorating so I would spend the $50 gift card on sprinkles, pans, new tips, fondent, ect. Hope I win!! :)
I so admire you for tackling fondant as I’ve afraid of it for years. In fact, I’m a bit scared of cakes in general and only begun making them at all this year (my Dad requested one for his birthday). So if I won the Michael’s gift certificate I’d use it for the cake decorating class – it’s time I get over my cake-intimidation! And maybe buy a few cake pans, too.
I’d definitely spend the gift card on cake decorating classes, or at least cake decor supplies! I’ve recently blown out my last pastry bag… I’m also in need of cake decor classes as stated here:
http://bakersbakery.wordpress.com/2009/06/04/200th-post-2nd-anniversary-cake/ :)
Hmm…a $50 Michael’s gift card? I would go into the store, determined to spend it on baking/cupcake supplies, but after wandering around and ending up in the jewelry making aisle, I think I’d come away with a nice mix of cake decorations and awesome beads and findings. That would be…um, sweet! :)
I would use the gift card to take a candy making class at Michael’s! I love making things with chocolate!
[...] btw… have you entered my giveaway for a $50 Michael’s Arts & Crafts store giftcard? You can’t win if you don’t [...]
Taking a baking or pastry class has been on my “bucket list” for years. This $50 would give me the push I need to find one I like and sign up! :)
And your cake is so lovely!
I fell into your site by searching wilton courses. I have been watching all the episodes of ace of cakes, and cake boss. I am so inspired. I have been contemplating trying to teach myself cake decorating.
Your cake is really great and inspired me more to possibly taking a couple of the classes. We have a chef’s acadamy here but its very expensive so starting at Michael’s may just be what is best.
I’ve taken all of the classes for cakes at Michael’s….loved them and learned so much. I too, am loving fondant!
I’d definitely spend the gift certificate on more supplies…can’t have enough cake decorating tools!
I’m so impressed that you’re relatively new to fondant and can do something like that! You’ve inspired me to try it too.
I took a class at a local bakery 6 years ago but did nothing with it. I’m ready to give it another go since I’ve gotten more into baking and cakes. Thanks!
I’d spend it all on baking supplies–pastry bags, tips, and a nice rolling pin.
Beautiful cake!
What wouldn’t I spend a $50 gift card on? I would start taking the Wilton courses and I would love to get all kinds of great new baking supplies.
What a beautiful cake! I would take a fondant class and/or buy all kinds of fun cupcake supplies.
I would definitely spend it on a cake decorating class & supplies.
I am so impressed with your cake! I can’t believe you just started working with fondant! I would definitely take a cake decorating class because as much as many of my baking skills have improved, cake decorating is one area where I still really struggle.
I really love the color theme of your cake! Wow, if I were going to get married again, I think I’d love to have a cake just like that at my reception! lol If I were to win, I would absolutely want to start classes, and learn to create edible art like that! =)
Hi Em,
I just had my very first Wilton I class today and it was so much fun. I’d use the $50 for the Wilton Fondant and Gum Paste course. That’d be awesome.
wow that is a nice cake!
i would use the winnings to buy fondant to try it out myself. i’ve always been curious about trying it out. i made some home made once but wasn’t too sure about it. the pre-made stuff is something i wish i could afford to get to try out and see how it works.
The cake is absolutely beautiful. Sugar overload, here I come! As much as I love to bake, I love making candy more. Would probably buy some fillings , candy coloring and molds.
Gorgeous cake!
That gift card would *definitely* be going towards my first Wilton cake decorating course. I’ve been wanting to take those courses for so long and will finally have the time this fall.
I would luv to makes cakes learning Wilton!
I would buy some canvases for painting. Thanks for the giveaway!
I would buy some decorative items for the house. That cake looks very good btw!
Some baking materials would be a nice addition to my kitchen. Thanks for the giveaway!
I have a few things I want to frame at Michael’s. It would be great to win that! Thank you!
I would buy some art supplies and maybe some candy…haha! Thanks for the giveaway!
Your cake looks SO yummy….I would take a cake course, I love to make cakes and I am new to fondant and have so many questions, so a class would be right up my ally…
[...] forget to enter my giveaway for a $50 gift card… you can’t win if you don’t enter… so… whatcha [...]
I adore working with Fondant & I have wanted to buy styro-foam forms to do a “sample” cake to display. Any of you learning it, I must say, it’s well worth the effort & heart you put into it. I have worked 4 years in the Banquet Service & do many weddings. In those four years…only one cake was done in fondant & it was beautiful. So, when you present your cake, trust me, it will catch all eyes & will be appreciated. I know – because that cake certainly caught my eye – much like this delicate cake has. Just beautiful! I have just started constructing my “under my home” lil’ bakery & cakes are one of my passions. I would use the gift certificate to display my sample cake & open the doors to Persnickety’s. While walking by that sample cake I will be remembering the possible gift certificate that displayed my lil’ cake. Smiles
My 11 daughter is the baker of the family. She really wants to take the Wilton class, so I would be the “cool mom” and take her to it.
I’ve always wanted to take a Wilton course, this might be the ticket to go!
Emi, that is one very nice looking cake. I always got frustrated working with fondant and made my assistants do it when I was a pastry chef. I am a little jealous of you. I am teaching a cake decorating class this winter, and I purposely am avoiding fondant. I hope nobody asks for it.
I would love a chance for a gift card. I love going to Michaels, and would probably spend the money on cool fabrics to top my preserve jars for gifts, and more cake making supplies (that I do not need, but can’t resist).
I would love to spend a Michael’s gift card and a cake decorating class. I, too, have a relatively recent love for baking (2007-ish) and I have come to a point where I REALLY want to learn to decorate a cake for real. I want to make something pretty and not *just* tasty! :D
I would love to get some new tools for cake and cookie decorating. Or cupcake decorating… I recently got Martha Stewart’s new cupcake book and it’s got so many cute things in it I want to make…
I am starting my first Wilton Course 1 tonight and I know that I will end up spending more than $50 on supplies so I would buy even more with a gift card!
I will spend it all in the cake decorating aisle for sure!
