My Wilton cake decorating course #3 has sadly come to an end and this was the final cake I made for class.  Hard to believe that barely a month ago I’d never worked with fondant before and now?  Well, all I can say is I just love doing fondant cakes!   I started doing cake decorating over ten years ago but it’s just now that I’ve learned fondant techniques.  I was so intimidated for sooooooooo long but quite honestly fondant is incredibly versatile,  pretty darn forgiving… and a whole lotta fun :)   It’s SO much fun that I’m doing my very first giveaway – all with the intended purpose of sharing the fun with one lucky reader!

I’ve taken a few Wilton cake decorating courses and the techniques I’ve learned have come in really handy in a variety of ways.  From jazzing up brownies to decorating cupcakes to making gumpaste flowers to doing full out tiered cakes… and I really enjoy it.   This final cake was quite a challenge – but totally in a good way.  I hadn’t before covered a cake in black fondant and I discovered it was more difficult than white fondant.  You see, when you have white buttercream under white fondant if there’s a small tear in the fondant it’s not nearly as noticeable as white buttercream peeking thru a small tear in black fondant! LOL!  The “quilted” look and making fondant swags were not taught in class but I had seen them done on other cakes so I searched the internet for information on how to do work it out :)   And most importantly I learned that no matter how much time I think a cake is going to take… I’m wrong and it’ll take longer so add plenty of “extra” time :)

And because so many people have emailed with questions and wanting to get started with cake decorating classes or further their cake decorating skills,  I’m giving away one $50 gift card to Michael’s Arts & Crafts store.  Michael’s offers Wilton cake decorating classes on a regular basis and it’s such a terrific way to develop your skills… and meet some great people as well.   To enter the giveaway all you have to do is leave a comment on this post telling me how you’d spend the $50 gift card :)  Maybe you’ve never done any cake decorating and you’d spend it on your first course!  Maybe you’ve already done some cake decorating and would spend it on additional supplies!  Or maybe you’re not into cake decorating at all and you’d spend it on scrapbooking paper or something entirely different!  But whatever it is leave a comment before midnight PDT on Sunday August 9th and you’ll be entered.  Limited to US or Canadian residents this time around :) I’ll randomly draw a number and announce the winner on my site.  Be sure to enter so you have a chance to win!!

Thanks everyone – entries are now closed.

Even though my class is over, I’ll be continuing to make fondant covered cakes – in fact I’ve promised my coworkers!  Pretty much most of what I bake they’re the ones who get to eat it :)

That’s a great cake! I just took a cake decorating course, so I would love the chance to splurge on new neat rollers and cutters to play with the fondant!

I’ve decided to finally try working with fondant. I plan on doing it this weekend, at the very least this month. I love Michaels… great giveaway! :)

that cake is gorgeous! I would use a gift certificate to add to my still tiny collection of cake pans.

  4. Dianne says:

Beautiful cake! There are so many fun things to get at Michaels, but I think I would use the certificate towards getting some artwork framed.

Sign me up – I need some cake decorating supplies!

This cake is gorgeous! I have to make my 1st cake for course 3 this weekend and I was looking for ideas. I agree that making cakes is so much fun. But I could definitely use that giftcard to help with all the supplies – especially now that my work has decided that I have to make cakes to everyone’s birthday!!

  7. Lucy says:

I’m starting the fondant course on Monday. I can’t wait!!! I’ve been afraid of fondant for so long! Your cake is GORGEOUS!

  8. Tiffanie says:

  9. Melanie says:

Congratulations on the beautiful cake! I really love the quilt-effect detail; I had never seen that before!

I’m looking forward to starting Course 3 this weekend at Michael’s. If I were to win a $50 gift-certificate, I would use it to buy cake decorating supplies and sign-up for Course 4 in September.

  10. Karen says:

Tonight is my first class for Course 3. I really enjoyed Course 1. Course 2 isn’t offered as frequently as the others. I’ll have to wait until they offer it again. Anyway, I have been buying supplies little by little and have spent over $300 already! I would love to be the winner your generous giveaway but would be equally happy for whoever wins it. YOU ROCK! You obviously have a gift. You are blessed. Thanks for sharing.

  11. Valerie says:

You cake is so cute! I’m a little scared of fondant myself. It’d be great to learn how to use it. Or just add to my collection of cake & cookie decorating supplies. Oh, now I’m getting all excited!

  12. tra says:

cool! what a gorgeous cake! i hope to win this!

  13. Christy says:

I would take the fondant class. Or maybe buy some new cake pans, or some new caking books…..

  14. Karen says:

I’d sign up for a cake calss if I win this. Your’s looks real nice.

  15. Rachel says:

I would spend that $50 on baking supplies for making cakes! How FUN!

  16. Laura says:

I’ve always wanted to take a Wilton class.

  17. alice says:

If I won, I would buy more cake decorating supplies.. a person can never have too many tips!

  18. Christie says:

I used to do cake decorating but as time went on it bothered my hands too much. I was working with the traditional piped icing then. I truly admire your accomplishment with fondant.

If I won the gift card I would spend it on beads, fabric and such for collage work that I am experimenting with right now. Or maybe for brushes and paints.

  19. I have to be honest, as much as I would LOVE to splurge on cake tools, and believe me I would, I would probably spend the $50 on some Golden brand acrylic paints, and canvas. I am an artist, but after having 2 kids, I have not had the time to paint in YEARS, I constantly have the urge to but a decent collection of Golden paints can be a bit pricey for our budget. So yeah, I would buy myself some yummy golden paint to satisfy my creative cravings!

  20. In all honesty, I would register for a cake decorating class myself. I’ve considered taking them before, but never took the plunge. The $50 would certainly be an incentive.

  21. How generous of you. I am terrible at cake decorating, but make delicious from scratch cakes. I would take the class, because I love to make birthday cakes.

  22. suri says:

If I were to win I would splurge on extra tips and some fonadant rollers… I’m dying to try some new stuff!!!!

  23. Talita says:

Lovely cake!! Looks like going to the prom! Lol

  24. The icing looks so soft and fluffy, just like fabric. Really amazing work and a beautiful cake, would love to win that prize!

  25. Your cake looks beautiful! Well done…I love the quilting look. I have yet to try it myself.
